Quick Vent....

Happy Tuesday Everyone!
I hope you're all having a great day so far! I wish I could say that I'm in the best of moods but after visiting my Dr. yesterday.....I am far from that!! As much as I try to not put my personal business out here; I really need to get this off my chest so please bear with me.....

I didn't announce any New Year's resolutions or anything like that...I never do. For those that don't know, I was in a terrible car accident 2 years ago and lost the ability to use the right side of my body. As with any injured person with limited mobility; you gain a little bit of weight & I'm no exception. I can look in the mirror and see that I'm not *perfect* if YKWIM.

I've been working out really hard since January of this year, exercising, lifting weights, jumping rope...etc. My clothes fit a lot better, I look & feel great---this came from my Dr. himself. HOWEVER, the scale says that I weigh.....160 lbs!!! I need to lose 30 lbs to be within the *healthy* guidelines for my height. You have no idea how my heart sank when I stepped on the scale.....my husband tells me that I'm just solid, a lot of muscle because I lift weights like people change clothes. How can it be possible that someone that barely eats, exercises daily & can get into clothes that she never thought she would again be overweight? I am so frustrated, in tears just thinking about the struggle ahead of me to lose 30 lbs so I can be considered HEALTHY!!!!

I went on a nice long bike ride this morning, sweating my butt off and then came home and followed my regular exercise program. I ate a Special K bar for breakfast and drank water.....what's that 90 calories! I haven't had a snack or anything because I'm not hungry.....I don't know what else to do. I will continue on my path although it's been 6 months and I've managed to gain instead of lose. Maybe they're right.....muscle weighs more than fat and I shouldn't lift weights anymore---HOWEVER---everyone knows that you should tone as you lose so that you'll look FIRM instead of FLABBY! I hate scales, I don't even have one in my home & I'm for sure not buying one now. I am at a loss, ready to give up but not going to, frustrated, pretty pissed off & crying at the same time because of what the stupid scale says........

I'm going to try and create something pretty.....hoping that takes my mind off all this crap and just focus. Thank you for lettting me vent and hope you all have a great rest of the day!
TTFN,
Hugs,

  1. Jackie, have you had your thyroid checked? My girlfriend went through this a few years ago, exercise, eating healthy 4 months later she weighed more and this while on weight watchers, when she went to the Dr. to find out why, they did a test, and found she was Hy-po. I was in top physical health, run, mt climb, last year I almost died I was hyper thyroid, every time they took a test it showed ok, until I was unable to walk and ended up in bed for 4 months, then they found I had an overactive thyroid. never knew these things could do so much damage to the body.
And muscle weight is heavier, my ideal weight is 120 at 5'7, but I am healthiest at 150 wearing a size 10.

  3. Jackie don't let it get you down. Get it out and push it aside. If you think you look and feel better go with that. Wishing you the best.

  5. Don't despair - you're obviously doing all the right things with exercising. I know it might sound daft but sometimes you might not be eating enough and so your metabolism may have slowed down as it's got used to eating less.

Try kick starting it again with lots of fruit and veg and as Becky said it might be worthwhile asking about your thyroid

  6. oh girlfriend, i so feel your pain & frustration. i once joined weight watchers with a friend. i kept a journal, did NOT cheat, exercised (she didn't) and in 7 months she lost 32 lbs and I lost 4. can you believe it? 4 freakin' lbs in 7 freakin' months!

here's what i found.... any diet will work BUT (yep, there's a but) ONLY IF YOU'RE MIND IS INTO IT! stop trying so hard. maybe at this point in your life this is where you're supposed to be. the doc can scare you and all it does is make you feel bad. you'll be fine. i'm praying for you.

hey, i've been trying to lose 50 lbs for 7 years! i've lost 25 but that was only after walking every day and limiting my cals to 1500 a day. i'm healthy, fat and i'll die happy.

you'll be fine. don't be so hard on yourself. we all love you here and are here if you need any of us.

    hugs,

  8. Jackie weight seems to be a struggle with everyone I know. If I were you I would have my body fat measured for a true idea if you are in a healthy range. I think it is called BMI? anyhoo just do a search under measuring body fat and I am sure it will come up and you can measure it yourself. Secondly I agree with the previous post you may not be eating enough or often enough. If you do not eat enough or often at least every 3-4 hours your body goes into starvation mode and hangs on to the calories you do get. Try eating small meals every 3 hours you will be surprised at what it does for your metabolism.

  9. Hang in there, I know what you mean, I have taken alot of steroids due to my 4 back surgeries in 3 yrs. I've gained the weight and can't get it off. My thyroid is a troublesome spot also. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't even with meds.
Keep up the exercising, I can't even do that. Things will get better in time.

    Hugs,
    Lois

  10. I wouldn't let the numbers bother you. Before you stepped on the scale you were happy and feeling well and that's what really matters. And don't worry too much about what your doctor says. I hate those "perfection charts". I know very few people who can live up to their standards. Plus, I don't know if you can always trust doctors when it comes to weight. I had a doctor who used to get on my case about my excess weight and she easily outweighed me by at least 50lbs. I always thought she should follow her own advice before doling out any to others.

  11. Jackie, was the scale balanced? Was it at "0" before you stepped on? Clothing and shoes weigh a little. Before you go crazy...see if maybe the scale was wrong, first. If you truly fell like you have lost weight, the go to a grocery store (most of them have free scales) and see if it is the same (or close...because they are all a little different). But don't let the scale determine how you FEEL!! If you feel great...then who cares whate the scale says?!

  12. Hey there sweetie,

I saw you last night and you look wonderful. Don't let it get you down. Keep up the good work.

  13. Oh, my, Jackie....it sounds like you are doing everything right...throw away those stupid scales and go with how you feel...you are the best judge of how healthy you feel and look...not a number on a piece of paper!!! You go, girl!!!

  14. Oh Jackie, I feel your pain too! We've all been there, done that! Hang in there...tomorrow will be brighter!

  15. First of all I am sorry to hear about you being in that terrible accident! However, sounds like you are actively recovering if you are exercising, lifting weights and jumping rope!!!!

Weight is not always an indicator of health! I would say if you are eating healthy, exercising and you feel good-don't worry about the numbers. And-it is your blog feel free to vent any time!!!

  16. Jackie, I haven't read your other posts but I'm sure they are pretty much going to have the same sentiments as mine.....the number on the scale does not determine if you are healthy or not! You sound like you are eating right and exercising and that is the secret to being healthy. Don't forget it's in your attitude and how you feel too. You mentioned you were feeling better in your clothes, so get in that mirror and celebrate that!

  17. One more thing, my brother is a personal trainer and nutritionist and a fanatic. He ALWAYS says to eat 5 small meals a day as opposed to 3 as it will help boost your metabolism.

  18. Jackie, I've read all the posts before mine and everyone has such good advise. So many of us are in the same boat, trying to lose weight. It's amazing how easy it is to put it on, but almost impossiboe to take it off. At leaset you are in a better boat than me...I have 80 pounds to lose!! So we can just keep working at it and supporting each other. That's what I notice in everyones' comments...lots of support and love !!!

  21. I so hear you Jackie!!! I am about at that weight now too and I have not been working out like I should!!! It is a horrible feeling to see that scale say that!!!

The nurse in me says to lift weights a little less and do cardio or other cal. burners more, but who am I to tell you anything!!!

It sucks to be a woman with weight men can look at the scale and loose weight with little effort, but us women not so easy!!!

  22. Jackie I am so sorry your doctor made you feel bad. I don't know what your height and bone structure are but that data and the possibility that you have built up a lot of muscle from your workouts should be considered in the MD's assessment. There are still some doctors who are using the very outdated Metropolitan Life height and weight charts. Please don't get to stressed out about this. As long as you feel well and your blood pressure and other health assessments are fine, just keep doing what you are doing. You have come along way and accomplished so much for someone with limited mobility!
